Period Colours

Period Colour Tracking 🩸

In Traditional Chinese Medicine the colour of your menstrual blood is an important diagnostic tool. Here’s a basic break down of what it may mean:

🍑 Light pink
Nutrition deficiencies or a weak digestive system - keep an eye out for additional symptoms such as dizziness and heart palpitations, and discuss with your therapist. Increase blood building foods like bone broth & dark leafy greens 🥬

🍒 Bright red
Generally this is the ideal colour with a smooth consistency, no mucus or clots. However, if accompanied by headaches, acne, night sweating then it may indicate excess Heat - gently cool this Heat with mint or green tea 🍵

🍇Red-Purple
Usually accompanied by clots, this is a sign of stagnation and impaired flow of Qi and Blood. You may also have cramping pain and headaches. Daily movement & warm foods/drinks only, no ice 🙅🏻‍♀️🧊

⚫️Purple-Black
Severe stagnation. Usually accompanied by severe pain, large blood clots, and either minimal or excessive flow. May indicate pathogenic Cold in the uterus in TCM terms. This needs further investigation, chat with your GP. Severe period pain may be common, but that does not mean it is normal.

🍂Brown
•At the start of your period: may be old blood from your previous cycle
•At the end of your period: slow moving blood has had time to oxygenate and turn brown
Either way, we need to encourage a smoother flow of Qi and Blood throughout the cycle with daily movement, warm foods and hydration 💦

⚠️ Any spotting outside of your period should always get checked out to be safe!
