Collagen; back to basics.

Collagen is a protein produced in the body, it’s the main building block of our bones, skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. We start to produce less as we age, after we’ve stopped growing. This means more wrinkles and sagging skin. So, many people want to boost their collagen production for firmer, younger looking skin. Here’s how:

🍊 DIET
Collagen is made from 2 amino acids found in meat, tofu, and legumes. The process of turning these acids into collagen requires 2 co-factors: Vitamin C and Copper. Vitamin C is found in high doses in citrus fruits and bell peppers, Copper can be found in sesame seeds, lentils, cocoa powder and organ meats. Fat cells have also been shown to boost collagen, you can add more healthy fats to your diet in the form of fish, nuts and seeds. A balanced diet should be enough for healthy collagen production, however, your body will prioritise your muscles, bones and joints over fixing your wrinkles. There’s no evidence to show the collagen from supplements will make it to your face...

🍑 SKINCARE
A major factor in collagen production is deep tissue massage! Add a mini facial massage to your routine while cleansing or applying an oil. Micro-trauma to the skin also creates a collagen boost - i.e. cosmetic acupuncture, and microneedling. You can also look for face serums or moisturisers with Vitamin C to boost your intake topically. This can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so use in the evenings or make sure to wear a high factor SPF with UVA and UVB protection.

❌AVOID
Too much sun exposure, smoking, and too much refined carbohydrates all inhibit the production of collagen. Stress, poor sleep and diet will also have an effect on skin ageing. Take care of yourself, take care of your skin.
